Trip to New York City?

I am going to NYC next week and plan to spend Sat, Sun, Mon and Tues in the city.

I will be taking the staten island ferry to and fro each day.

I will have my 14month old with me in a stroller, Im 22weeks pregnant (and my hubby has his leg in one of those removable casts. I know, great time to go huh, but its now or never!

So I was just wondering if anyone has any tips, we will be going a little slow and need to stop now and again but we will have fun.

What will be the best way for us to get around?

Any kid friendly restaurants that we will enjoy too?

apart from Central park is there anywhere easy for us to stop to let my child have a play?

and any other tips on stuff to do?

oh, I have seen lots of people saying china town is great, but no1 said why or what is there?

thanksTrip to New York City?
I just came from there and had the best time. Go to South Street Seaport; there is alot of shops, food court and plenty of room to walk around; if you are going into the city be prepared to WALK ALOT, it is crowded %26amp; you will definitely bump into people, so be careful; there are cabs but its hardly worth taking one if you are only going a couple of blocks. Down by Battery Park is a nice area too; the funnest thing I did was take a 6 hr tour of NYC. Its on a small bus and they may be able to accommodate your needs. www.onboardnewyorktours.com; it's 80.00 but is well worth it especially if they can accommodate you. I took the tour first then spent the rest of my days going back to certain places I wanted to see again. And there is alot of kid friendly places in the tourist areas, outside of that there is not much accommodating for children. You have to see the World Trade Center Site (and go to the museum across the street); Trinity church is beautiful as well as St Paul's. In that short amount of time and with your conditions I would spend the extra $$ and go for the tour. It will take you to all those places and more plus give you the history, then you can do as I did and go back to the places that you want to revisit. Good luck, have a blast!!Trip to New York City?
Hi! This sounds like a great trip.

I must say, much of NY is really un-child friendly. I myself rarely ever see kids, and I can't imagine why anyone would recommend chinatown to you for kids. It's a bustling mass of people, incredibly disorganized, there is rotting food, garbage, and other unmentionables littering the entire neighborhood. There aren't really any playgrounds or things to do other than visit open food markets and hold-in-the-wall asian restaurants (and everything smells like fish). Don't get me wrong, I LOVE chinatown as I am a cook, but wouldn't bring a child there.

Tribeca is an extremely family oriented neighborhood, and on the weekend you will see tons of strollers lining the streets, and the west side highway along the water has lots of parks and verandas. I agree that south street seaport is a great place to take children, and honestly the central park zoo is pretty cute as well for children. If you're willing to venture into times square, there is a GIGANTIC toys'r'us there that always amuses kids when they visit me. There is even a little kiddie ferris wheel inside. As for restaurants, any really touristy area will cater to families and kids, so times square would be another place to find big restaurants and chains with kid friendly cuisine. Stay away from hip neighborhoods like the village and MePa (on the weekends especially) for dinner, because the patrons of those establishments are generally shelling out for ethnic or expensive food, and often are boisterous/drinking (myself) included, thus not the best place for kids to be running around.

I also agree the tours are a great way to get off your feet. There is even a duck tour that is half in the water and half on the street! If you are convenient to the subway, use it - I see strollers on there all the time. But if it's a real hike to the closest stop or your child is being uncooperative, just suck it up now and then and take a cab. The best of us new yorkers do that occasionally anyway.
