Safety depends if you are in neighborhoods where other people out and walking around at night. Some neighborhoods are not adviseable for a newcomer even during the day. You might walk down the wrong street. When you walk, walk closer to the buildings than to the street in case you have to run into one. You should go to some Manhattan restaurants. If you have a $5 cab ride, you should tip $1. Waiters expect big tips. I guess it is 20% now. You dont have to carry a passport if you have some other ID in case it is lost you could replace more easily. September is still a bit warm but I suggest wearing darker clothing because it is dirty. If you are going somewhere on the W. side I would land at Newark. I dont know if many international flights land at LaGuardia but it is smaller than JFK. There is bus service from them into Manhattan. A cab will cost around $40. I dont know if they have shuttle vans. They did not have when I lived in NY.
The only event I can remember in NY in September is the Feast of San Gennaro in Little italy
I was young when I went to NY alone and stayed in a womens hotel but they probably dont have them anymore. Here is a web link I found informative.
