I am a 25 year old female who will be traveling to NYC for the first time this week. I am wondering:
1. What type of clothing should I wear?
2. How dangerous is it to travel from Manhattan to Brooklyn in the late night/early morning?
3. Best bars/clubs for someone who likes hip-hop music?
4. Any bar/club/restaurant that I should not miss on a trip to NY?Questions on trip to NYC???
I am a native NY'er and can help a little. Although I grew up in the 'burbs I still visited NYC plenty. Still do every time I go home to visit.
1) Style-wise, no different than your normal mode of dress. Common-sense choices when going out to restaurants and clubs. People are not ultra-chic just because they live in NY. Believe me.
For the weather, choose summer styles. Pack one pair pants/jeans and a hoodie. Although it is summertime, my mom (who still lives there) said it rained for a couple days last week and was in the 50-60's. If you are going to be out in the early mornings or late evenings take a light jacket. I now live in the south and went home a couple years ago at 4th July. Was a little chilly for me at those times because I was used to different weather.
2) You will not have problems if you travel in pairs/groups. Always use mass-transit/public transportation. Don't walk around at night except from the subway station to your hotel or from the hotel to the restaurant. If you can, stick a $20 in your bra or sneaker/sock just in case. Then you won't be stranded. Don't carry any more than you absolutely need -- ID, debit card, credit card, MINIMAL CASH. That's IT. If your wallet is stolen the less you need to replace the better. NO giant purses full of crap. It is best during outings to keep cash in your front pockets if you are wearing jeans, remember minimal amounts. Wear sneakers. I always stuck a 20 in my sock when I was doing the touristy/shopping thing. Thankfully I never needed it. Also, be aware of your surroundings. If you are traveling alone DO NOT listen to your iPod and zone out.
3-4) Sorry I have been out of the scene a while. But, NY is a BIG city. Try going to http://www.nycvisit.com/content/index.cf… -- or ask the clerk at the front desk of your hotel, your waitress, the check-out person at the corner grocery (if they speak English haha). Anywhere you go there will be people. Don't be afraid to speak up. NY'ers love their city and are proud of it. They also love to send someone to their favorite "little italian place" or bakery or pizza joint or whatever.
Have a bagel and a slice of pizza for me while you're there. Oh, and if you remember grab me a box of Drake's Devil Dogs. They don't have those here. Above all HAVE FUN and FUGGEDABOUDIT!!
I'm really, really, really jealous! I went to NYC my first time last Christmas and it was the most exciting experience in my life! Just don't get too wrapped up in planning things out...try to just soak the city in as long as you can! My favorite area to eat and walk around in was Soho and you should definitely take advantage of canal street! Sorry I don't know the answers to your questions, but just thought I would wish you a safe trip and I hope you have a blast!!!Questions on trip to NYC???
I can see right now your going to get in a lot of trouble in New York City. I lived in NY for 4 years and it's a tough place to be alone. Bars are no place to go, but if you must, be very careful. Go see the wonderful sights. The Empire State Bldg., the Statue of Liberty, Radio Music Hall, etc. Get a visitors guide and see all the great places to go and see. Most cost you nothing or very little. Times Square is very dangerous. Lots of girlie shows, etc. Not a nice place.
On the safety question, if you are feeling uncomfortable (or if you are intoxicated and traveling alone), take a cab. The subway is safe, but the common sense rules of urban streets still apply.Questions on trip to NYC???
