Thanksgiving in NYC?

We are visiting NYC over Thanksgiving week, and being British don't really now what to expect.

Will we find shops, restaurants, tourist attractions closed on the day, operating shorter hours or just busier? Do all public transport services still run and are cabs more expensive on this day?

What would you recommend we do to experience a bit of the celebration for our first visit over this particular holiday? For example are there any parades or similar celebrations?Thanksgiving in NYC?
First of all there is a big Parade called Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. It is a very big deal and features giant helium balloons of cartoon characters floating above and marching bands and floats of all kinds on the street. It is very popular and is shown on national TV. You should not miss it. Many stores will be closed but some areas, specifiably Chinatown are opened as usual. If you want to experience a traditional American Thanksgiving day many resyurants serve the traditional meal: Roast turkey, sweet potatoes, stuffing and cranberry sauce.
