I am looking for a city similar to NYC but I dont wanna move to Miami or LA
Atlanta is the only other major one that crosses my mind but I have only been there once. My cousin lives there, I think he lives in buck head or bank head, not sure. His apartment complex is the most luxurious gated complex I have ever seen. It looked like it was built for royalty, you actually have to dial at the gate for him to open it. And the call goes straight to his cell and he can open it from there. We dont have stuff like that in NY. He only pays $900 for a 2 bedroom, thats great. I am tired of suffering in NY paying $1500 for a small sh*t hole, I need to move to the south! NYC is too overrated
I am a Trinidadian so I wanna go to place with lots of immigrants (whether it be Russians, Indian, Jamaicans, Africans...etc), lots of restaurants (such as Spanish and Caribbean restaurant), public transport so I wont have to rely on my car, lots of jobs, night life...etc
Is Atlanta the place for me?
From what I heard Atlanta is on the rise ad will be the next big thing
When I was younger no one cared about Atlanta and it was just known for hair and pimpin, but now Atlanta seems like heaven. Everyone is moving from the North to the South because they realized the North is expensive and its a sh*t hole. Everyone is come to TN, GA and TX
Whats your take on it, and should I move here?
I have like 5k saved up so that should get me into an apartment with a down payment. The same week I move there I will take my security Guard course (which is like 1 hr) and get the certificate, I will then apply for my Georgia guard card and work as a security guard until I settle down and find a better job. They are always on need of security guards and it looks better of you have your guard card so I think thats agood plan to keep me afloat while getting situated. APD is also hiring and I am going to go to their job fair this Saturday to put in an application there as well
I plan on making the final move in MAY after I finish up this semester in NY, I am not sure which college I wanna transfer too but I will put college on hold until I get a steady job that can pay the rent
What do you think about my plan? I wanna enjoy life and not have to struggle, anyone who lived in NY knows its a struggleShould I move to Atlanta to start a new life, how's life there?
I can relate to what you say. I moved to Atlanta 18 years ago from NYC. My incentive was an easier, less-costly life -- and a good place to raise my daughter. My expectations were borne out, and I'm quite happy here.
The way I see it, 'nothing ventured, nothing gained.' You have a plan, you have some savings ... give it a go. I would suggest though, that you come back and spend a few days here before you make the big move. When you look at a place as a prospective home, you'll be interested in things that you might not see as a tourist.
I don't know anything about the guard business, but I do know that unemployment is higher here than the national average, and people who might not have taken security jobs before the recession are happy to have anything now. (What I'm saying is, employment isn't a done-deal.)
I'd also suggest that you put college on hold, until you establish residency which I think is about a year. It'll save you a lot of money!
Atlanta is growing. There are many more cultures here now, than there were when I arrived. Each neighborhood has its own characteristics. Buckhead and Bankhead -- which you cite -- are totally different! Come check it out!
go for it! atlanta is beautiful and affordable! i love atl. soo many restaurants and FUN things to do!
FILA
forever i love atlanta

I'd recommend taking a few days to a week to visit and go around the city before deciding to move there. Some cities sound nice until you get there and realize they're not what you are expecting.
you said: "I am looking for a city similar to NYC but I don't wanna move to Miami or LA".
The only American cities that are similar to NYC are Chicago and Boston to a lesser degree. Chicago is much more manageable than NYC. Some people call Atlanta the New York of the South. I honestly can't find any one reason why this title sprung up. Houston, Dallas, and Miami has a higher population than Atlanta. Houston and Dallas has more jobs than Atlanta.
I do like the apartments in Atlanta. I also have a nice apartment for only $900, but I could of got the same style apartment in a Chicago suburb for about $1100.
you said: "From what I heard Atlanta is on the rise and will be the next big thing"
I honestly think Atlanta is never going to be more than what it is already. Of course the city is building new developments, but it will never be on the level of Chicago and NYC. Those cities are a lot older and had an earlier start on development. I know for a fact Chicago also has a lot of new developments and there not just going to sit back and let Atlanta catch up with them. Plus, Atlanta is not the city of jobs like it use to be...Texas filled that void.
you also mentioned public transportation as being a concern. When I lived in the Chicago area you can catch trains from indiana to downtown Chi. I know in NYC you can hop on the metro north from Connecticut to midtown. NYC, Chicago, and Boston are the only walkable cities in America. If you live in the city limits of Atlanta or near in Dekalb county you can get by without a car, but you will be riding more buses than trains. Most suburban towns in the metro Atlanta area frown on public transit and don't want it in their suburbs. Cars are a must in Atlanta.
As for your schooling you should do your homework on that situation before you come. You need to find out how many credit hours you will lose by transferring schools. If you are close to being done with school than you should stay in NY, but if you just start I would take the lost and move.Should I move to Atlanta to start a new life, how's life there?
I hear you, I'm considering moving there as well!
Atlanta is one of the best places to live especially coming from NY. I'm planning a move down there as well. The cost of living is dramatically lower than NY and the job market is around the same for NY, but in most cases pay more depending on the field of work. I have a friend of mine who already made the jump from NY to ATL and he is living the good life there. 2 bedroom apartment for $600 with most utilities included that is bigger than what I have here and I pay $1200 a month. So regardless of what type of work you are in just by getting the same pay will still be better due to the cost of living. Insurance, food, utilities are way cheaper than NY. The most single factor in my decision to move is the housing market. You can definitely have a better house and pay less than half of a house purchased in NY. Try to live around Decatur or Dunwoody as those are great places to live and have a great amouny of people.
I'm asking myself the same question right now! There are lots of great suburbs around Atl and the landscape is beautiful. My brother lives about 30 mins north of Atlanta and loves it! I'm in Nashville right now, but I'm thinking I would like Atlanta a lot more.
Your cousin probably lived in Buckhead. Most decent apartment complexes in Atlanta are gated with the intercom system to open the gate. I would stick with good apartment complexes like ones owned/managed by Post, Gables or Worthing. There are alot of immigrants here, not only transplanted from other countries but from alot of other states. We have quite a mixture of people here in Atlanta. The public transportation is okay, but not great, its called MARTA or there is Cobb County Transit or Gwinnett Transit. The job market is not really very good at the moment, we currently have a higher unemployment rate than the nation so you might have a hard time finding a job, however you are right there are several police departments hiring here and you might have some decent luck in the security guard field. You might want to look into Dallas or Austin, Texas as well. You are on the right path with having money saved up before you come here. That is about what I came here with, however I found a job within a month of moving here and that was 10 years ago when the economy was better. Anyway, best of luck.
Wow... Most here either have never been to atlanta or were born in atlanta and never left... reality check.. Atlanta will never be compared to NYC and LA... Note that NO ONE addressed your ethnicity and the diversity you are looking for in a city. For atlantans 'diversity' means sharing the same neighborhood and tolerating each other... There is no interaction. There's not enough diversity in foods. Job market is terrible above national average unemployment... There are people jobless here for years. No offense but lots of blacks moving in because atlanta metro is majority black but those blacks coming in are uneducated , un-skilled and you can find them at the unemployment insurance line at the DOL by hordes... That goes for the white people who come here with no job transfers. ALL good jobs for educated people are being given to transplants. Do not believe for a minute that your salary will be comensurate to your bills. You will make less here after all is said and done after all bills are paid. Dating scene??? Good luck. I hear the worse complaints from males and females. Do your homework.
