Hi I'm portuguese and 'm planning to move to NYC in 2012. I already have a job opportunity as a waitress in a nice italian restaurant of friends of a friend, and I plan to work as a Theatre Producer (that's my BA and MA studies). My problem is that I'll only have 2000 dollars to move (plain ticket does not count), is that enough? And do you know how much does a waitress earn? I would like to know if they will pay me fairly. I also have the opportunity to stay at a friend of a friend house for 2 to 3 weeks. Is that enough to make some more money to rent a room later? I'm a bit worried cause I've read that NYC is very expensive and that you need 10000 dollars (!!!) to move... I have a friend that moved to NYC with 100 dollars in the 90's and hit the big time there as a filmmaker. Is this being lucky or is it really a city of opportunities? How much do I need to move to NYC?
Believe me, you will need A LOT of money. How much do I need to move to NYC?
If I were you I would do some serious questioning before moving here. Do you know if the pay is good? Enough to make it on your own here? Find that out first. NYC is not the place to be if your not sure about these things. Do yourself a favor and dont step foot in this place without having a job that pays enough for your needs OR relatives/real close friends who can lend a firm hand. NYC can suck you dry.
