Hotels, food & sites for NYC trip in December?

I'm going to NYC for a week this Dec. (driving) and I was wondering if it's cheaper/better to stay somewhere in NJ or outside NYC and go in each day? I don't want to stay in a dive, but I'm not looking for $500 a night either.



Also, any recommended restaurants and sites? (I love sushi %26amp; Italian) I'm planning to see a show on Broadway, Macy's window, 9/11 Memorial, Rockefeller Center, Ellis Island, Central Park, and Chinatown/Little Italy. Any other must-see/do/dine things around this time of year??
