Hired for A Job, But still no Starting date or Salary offer after a month!!?

In early October I interviewed for a graphic design job for a prestigious Long Island architecture firm that designs restaurants . The boss and his partners took me out to a very nice lunch and about an hour into the lunch , the boss turned to me and said " I think you would fit in perfectly with us, the job is yours!!!" Two days later I got a phone call from him telling me that he wants me to join them and go to a trade show in NYC in Mid November. He also told me that in the beginning of the next week he would call me and set up a day for me to come in and talk over a salary and benefits package. That was a month ago, I have called his office a few times and even spoke with him. He keeps repeating to me" The job is yours, and I look forward to seeing you at the convention." I need to know a starting date because I need to give a few weeks notice to my present job. My girlfriend thinks that he is stringing me along. How do I handle this with him????

I am starting to get angry.Hired for A Job, But still no Starting date or Salary offer after a month!!?
He is stringing you along and I wouldn't count on actually having this job if I were you. It sounds like he is either impulsive or he is still trying to work out internal details like a budget to see if he can actually afford you.

Just sit back and see if he contacts you regarding the convention. If he does, play it by ear.Hired for A Job, But still no Starting date or Salary offer after a month!!?
this doesnt look professional .You should call and ask directly as to how to proceed further. They must be busy with something but... u cant wait forever like that.So call up and know ur statusHired for A Job, But still no Starting date or Salary offer after a month!!?
If he's treating you like this before you even start working, you have to wonder what it's going to be like once you are working there. If you think it's worth it, stop bothering him and wait for the convention.

If you must get an answer, I would advise you to call him and tell him you aren't trying to be disrespectful, but you feel like you are being strung along and that you have another offer on the table. Express your interest in the company, but also the interest you have in the "other" company. If he really wants you on his team, this should put a fire under his ***.

It really is possible that he is just busy...
I think your girlfriend is right. If he really wanted to hire you, you be in his office talking facts for this trade show.

The bottom line is this if he wanted you , you would be in that office working right now. Don't waste your energy on anger for this issue, you have a job, keep looking for another opportunity
