Do NYC males ask for phone # a lot?

Hi there. Thanks for reading my question!

I'm a Canadian student going to NYC for post-secondary. I just reached NYC this week and somehow there are strangers asking for my phone # (happened in restaurants, street blocks, etc). One person even asked if I "want to take a look at [his] place..." (............what was he thinking!!...)

This never happened in Canada. Is it a NYC tradition that I'm just not aware of? Or is it just because I look like an out-of-towner (since I constantly check maps for direction, pronounce Z as "zed", call it "washroom" instead of "restroom", etc. etc.)?

P.S. My apparel is not suggestive at all. Nor do I flirt. I have admit that this situation is making me a bit uncomfortable...

Thanks again~Do NYC males ask for phone # a lot?
so what's your number?Do NYC males ask for phone # a lot?
Whatever the culture and norm of that place may be, you should not give your mobil numbers or any other personal details to strangers. You are not being rude; and as a new arrival you will naturally attract a lot of attention because of your appearance and or mannerism etc. People will take advantage so you have to be on your guard.
