Two years prior I had vacationed there in NYC for a week. I had gone up to the Windows of the World Restaurant and had lunch. I had taken video from the window down to the gold scupture that was in the fountain in the center of the WTC. I look at that video sometimes. I realized the video caught the perspective of people who jumped out of windows to their death to escape death by fire. I went up with my uncle (Who I was staying with that summer) and ate up there too, the summer before. That was a really big deal for me.

No, I didn't do anything near there before 9/11... But that is so sad, to have the memories of being there when all was okay, and then to think of the devastation just two years later. And to have that video and see what those poor people saw before they died like that... It's so horrible. I don't even know what to say.
June of 2001, I flew into Laguardia airport. That's the only time I've been to New York.



I can only imagine the way it looked from up there. It's Terrible what happened on that day. I'll never forget it.

Well, a few months before I went with my brother and my mom's girlfriend and we said how one day we would have to go with my mom but uh, that never happened.



It was pretty scary on the day of the attack. First the school was locked down, and my mom couldn't get me. When I did go home, we had to go inside pretty much right away because there was actually smoke in the air (I live in northern NJ).

Rory Dolan's, on McLean Avenue in Yonkers, just north of the city (and I mean about one block north!) Great Irish pub, big restaurant, big bar area, private party room if you want to book that, and a terrific bar staff. Also, Rory spends a fortune every year on Christmas decorations, so the place looks wonderful.

What are some good child-friendly restaurants in NYC for children with limited eating options?

I'm visiting family in NYC for two weeks, and my youngest niece and my nephew are also visiting. My sister and I are taking turns babysitting them while my mother is at work. However, my nephew Cadyn is allergic or reacts to lots of things (corn, wheat, gluten, soy, all dairy products (even goat cheese and yogurt), eggs, sulfites, oats, coconut, carrots, black pepper, tuna, sesame seeds), and my niece Kylie is a vegetarian (she went vegetarian in the past year and is actually quite serious about it). Cadyn is only allowed to have red meat once a month because he reacts to it, and he's already had his month's share. Cadyn is five, and Kylie is almost eight.



I'm mostly going to be staying with my sister in Brooklyn, but we're also spending lots of time in Manhattan, as well as parts of the Bronx. I have lots of great activities planned for them (museums, nature preserves, parks, street fairs, free community theater, etc), but I need to be able to feed them. Since we're doing lots of walking and traveling on the train, carrying a big cooler of food is a little stressful. What are some good restaurants that I can take them to for lunch and dinner? I'm a vegan and I'm fairly savvy about vegan food in at least Brooklyn and Manhattan (so feeding Kylie won't be as much of an issue), but many of these places contain ingredients that Cadyn would react to.

Need Help! Good Restaurants in NYC!?

I'm moving from Florida to NYC in a little over a week to work an entry-level marketing job in Manhattan, which doesn't pay that much to start. I currently work at the Ruth's Chris here, and was hoping to be able to transfer to the one there as a second job to get by in New York, but they are currently full up, even though they liked me and would like to hire me. They told me to keep checking in every couple of weeks, but I don't have the time to wait around. What are some top notch restaurants in Manhattan I should start looking at? Don't let anyone know you worked at a Ruth's Chris or a Morton's or like them, they are considered to be on the level of Olive Garden by people here - only for tourists. If you are attractive and have a professional restaurant resume you will find a job at a restaurant job with no problem.
You do marketing for restaurants? I'm not sure what that entails, but the top steakhouses are Smith and Wollensky's and Peter Luger's as far as reputation. Morton's is also excellent. As far as other restaurants: Nobu, Morimoto, Daniel, Gramercy Tavern. There are an infinite number of fine steakhouses and restaurants here because there are an infinite number of ridiculously wealthy people. No list could even get you started.Need Help! You may want to head to Little Italy for a selection of Italian restaurants, but the restaurants there tend to cater to tourists. If you want to try a place that real New Yorkers eat at, here's what I suggest:



Celeste 84th and Amsterdam. Great local Upper West Side spot.



Trattoria Dopo Teatro 125 w. 44th St. - Great Theater District Italian



Otto - 1 Fifth Ave at 8th St. - Great pizza and pasta

Absolutely, come alone! People are friendly and helpful. Just be street smart.



Now as for what to see. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see:

Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house.

UPPER WEST SIDE:

Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West,

Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields.

MIDTOWN:

Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores.

St. Patrick's Cathedral

Museum of Modern Art

Sony Bldg

Rockefeller Center

Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats!

Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington.

Empire State Bldg.

The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids.



CHELSEA:

Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun.



WALL ST:

Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see.



THE VILLAGE:

Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers



SOHO:

Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse!

Hi hun, I went to nyc on my own last month, for a few days before miami.. definitely so much to see sight seeing wise..as for night life, im afraid its much fun to have a new yorker to hang out with.. ny-ers generally hang around with their own groups and do not generally talk to you. it is ok but miami is definitely cooler for a single traveller.. people are friendlier and nicer to a single woman than in ny.. walk around ocean drive and youll be bombarded with suggestions, not to mention invitations to a million social places.. wheerever u choose to go, i hope u enjoy yourself.. :)
