Hi I am a waiter in NYC and make tips. I receive a $0 paycheck each week. I used to work for a restaurant on Long Island, and would make a decent amount of money each week and still receive about a $75 paycheck. Looking at my Pay stub there are alot of different types of taxes being taken out that werent taken out on Long Island, AND I dont even think the City tax is being withheld.
I am single and Claim 0.
My Regular earning for my hourly rate of $5/hour were 178.90
My claimed tips were 660.45
Fed Med/EE/tip 9.57
Fed Withholdng 125.22
Fed OASDItipEE 27.73
Fed MED/EE 2.60
Fed OASDI/EE 7.52
NY Withholdng 5.66
NY OASDI/EE 0.60
There is like 5 different federals going on, I don't think the city tax is included there.
AND It says I owe federal and state because I didnt make enough to pay all the taxes.
When I worked on long Island the taxes taken out were
"federal"
"NY state"
"medicare"
"Social"
Those were the only ones, Both restaurants are corporate. I feel as though something is wrong here, But i dont know because it is NYC. Please help Thank YouWhat Taxes should be held in my paycheck in NYC?
That's correct. Employers must withhold FICA taxes from tips before withholding income taxes. If there's not enough regular pay to cover the income tax withholding, you will need to make estimated tax payments if you expect to owe more than $1,000 at filing time for federal and I believe it's $250 for NYS. If any pay period does not have enough wage income to cover the FICA taxes, you'll see entries for Uncollected FICA taxes on tips on your W-2. SS and Med will be broken out separately and you will need to add that to your income tax liability.
Alternatively you can turn over some of your tips to your employer so that they can withhold enough from your total income to cover your total tax liability. What Taxes should be held in my paycheck in NYC?
Go to http://www.paycheckcity.com and enter the requested data then compare the results to your paycheck stub.
